Ray Cavanagh is a New Jersey-born artist currently living in Morris County, New Jersey. He also resides on Hilton Head, South Carolina in the winter and on Westport Island, Maine in the summer. He was raised in South Amboy (NJ), graduating in 1959 from St. Mary’s High School. Ray holds a B.S. and a M.S. in Mathematics from St. Peter’s College and Steven’s Institute of Technology, respectively.
In a business career spanning 43 years, Mr. Cavanagh held executive positions with Exxon Corporation and H&M International Transportation. He retired from H&M in 2006, having served that Company as Executive Vice-President – Administration as well as being a member of their Board of Directors.
For years, Ray had created artwork for friends and family. Self-taught, he has worked in oils, pen-and-ink, pastels and watercolors. In 2006 he began specializing in watercolors. His railroad scenes grace the offices of the Intermodal Vice-Presidents of all the major railroads. He next produced a number of watercolors featuring lighthouses of North America. Since then Ray has painted watercolor series of domestic and foreign cityscapes, fishing villages, Southern low country landscapes, flowers, and the churches of Morristown, NJ. His paintings and prints are sold at Just Jersey (Morristown, NJ), The Rebecca Collection (Bernardsville, NJ), Main Street Frame Shop (Califon, NJ), Pleasant Pools and Patios Chester, NJ), The Shell Shop (Pemaquid Lighthouse, ME), Just Framing Gallery (Bath, ME), The Pink House Gallery (Hilton Head, SC), The Top of the Harbourtown Lighthouse Shoppe (Hilton Head, SC), and the Boathouse General Store (Hilton Head, SC). He has had exclusive six week exhibitions of his watercolors at the Rehabilitation Institute of Morris County Gallery, the Morris County Library (NJ), Chester Library (NJ) and at the National Exchange Carriers Association corporate gallery (NJ). Ray has frequently participated in art sales benefiting African Surgery Inc., a ministry of Assumption Church (Morristown,NJ).
In addition to his paintings Mr. Cavanagh has created 2008 -2014 calendars based on his watercolors. In 2013, Ray created a series of Christmas ornaments featuring his watercolors. In addition to the galleries selling his originals and prints, his ornaments are in the following stores: Country Christmas Shop at Chester Pools (Chester, NJ), Morris County Farms (Danville, NJ), Harbourtown Christmas Shoppe (Hilton Head, SC), Uniques & Antiques (Ogunquit, ME), the Blue Willow Gift Shop (Ogunquit,ME), Portland Head Lighthouse Museum Shop (Cape Elizabeth, ME), and The Village Store/ House of Logan (Boothbay Harbor, ME). He has been an Associate Member of both the New Jersey Watercolor Society, Inc. and the Garden State Watercolor Society.
